Playing a Musical Instrument While Wearing Braces

When your braces go on, there will be an initial period of adjustment, as the braces do tend to irritate the lips. We have available clear vinyl covers (called Morgan Bumpers) that go over the brackets to help make the lips more comfortable while playing a wind instrument. These can be placed by the patient while playing, then removed and stored in your instrument case. We provide these Morgan Bumpers free of charge. Just let us know if you or your child is a musician.

Athletics

If you play sports, it’s important that you consult us for special precautions. A protective mouthguard is strongly recommended while playing contact sports. Wearing a mouthguard helps to protect your teeth as well as your lips and cheeks. We provide mouthguards free of charge for our patients. We have available mouthguards with a strap to connect to a helmet, as well as mouthguards without a strap. In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, phone us at once for an appointment. In the meantime, treat your discomfort as you would treat any general soreness.
